How to use Skimbit to make a decision

Step 1: Sign-up to Skimbit

  1. Follow the easy sign-up process
  2. You'll be given a Skimbit account and your own homepage
Step 2: Get the Skimmer

  1. We install buttons/bookmarks into your browser
  2. They launch the Skimmer when clicked
  3. The Skimmer is what skims the important bits of sites you like, and automatically adds them to your project page.

Note: Internet Explorer and Safari users currently only have the option to install bookmarks. Firefox users can install either buttons or bookmarks, depending on what they prefer.

Step 3: Start a project

  1. Click on the 'Start new project' button on your 'My projects' page.
  2. Enter project title, description, project type and the criteria you will base your decision-making on
  3. Nominate how you want to share your findings (keep it private if you want no one else to view it, shared so only nominated friends can see it, or public if you don't mind who sees it). Add friends to your project now, or later once you are ready to share your findings.

Step 4: Begin your search

  1. You'll be presented with a blank project page. The URL to this will be http://your-username.skimbit.com/project-name.
  2. You can now begin your web search. If you run your mouse over the blank skimbit box, a Google search box will appear.
  3. Type your search terms in and begin your search as you normally would.

Step 5: Skim what you find

  1. When you find something you like, click on the 'Skim this!' button/bookmark in your browser to launch the Skimmer.
  2. The Skimmer will take a moment to load as it skims the contents of the page, and then presents you with its suggestions.
  3. To change any of the suggested titles, descriptions or images, click on the 'change' link, and either select an alternative or type one in yourself.

Step 6: Add the decision-making criteria values

  1. The decision-making criteria are the ones you chose in step 3
  2. Enter in the value for each, or pick a value from the list of suggestions
  3. The Skimmer can be minimised and dragged around the screen, so you can easily see the website underneath

Step 7: Add the skimbit to your project page

  1. Ensure all the entered information is correct
  2. Click the 'Add now' button
  3. You can view your project page with your newly added skimbit, or continue searching and skimming

Step 8: Repeat steps 4-7 until you have done enough research

  1. Keep searching for as many other options as you wish
  2. Each time you find something suitable, click on the 'Skim this!' button/bookmark and repeat the process described earlier.

Step 9: View your findings

  1. When you have finished your research, click on the 'Skimbit projects' button/bookmark on your browser
  2. Click on the project you are working on and you'll see all your findings on one page
  3. The way we present each of your findings is called a 'skimbit'

Step 10: Refine and sort your skimbits

  1. On the right-hand toolbar there are tools to filter and sort your findings
  2. Under 'Refine Results' you can filter your findings according to your selection criteria.
  3. To remove filters, deselect the checkbox that appears under 'Selected filters'.
  4. Under 'Sort by' you can sort your skimbits in various ways.

Step 11: Collect feedback

  1. If you want to get feedback from others, you need to pick the form of feedback you want.
  2. You do this on the right-hand toolbar under 'Collect feedback'
    • Ranking - viewers rank all your skimbits in order of preference e.g. 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc
    • Rating - viewers rate each skimbit out of 5 stars
    • Polling - viewers give each skimbit the thumbs up or down
    • Comments - viewers can write in their own opinion on each skimbit
  3. You can pick one or more of these forms of feedback collectors. By default all are chosen.
  4. When you are finished selecting feedback collectors, click the 'Hide' link to move this section to the bottom of the toolbar

Step 12: Share your project

  1. If you want to invite others to give feedback, click on the 'Invite friends now' link on the top left of your project page.
  2. This opens the Invitation Manager, which guides you through the process of adding names and sending invitations
  3. All names you add will automatically be added to your Skimbit Address Book for future use.
  4. An email will be sent to your friends, inviting them to your project page where they can do their own sorting, filtering, and give their feedback.

Note: If you have set your project up as 'Private', the 'Invite friends now' link isn't visible. Click on the 'Edit project' link and change your project to 'Shared' or 'Public'.

Step 13: Pick the best option

  1. Skimbit tallies up the feedback to your project and presents results in the 'Feedback results' tab of your project page.
  2. Ranking is represented by a horse race; the first horse represents the skimbit with the highest average ranking.
  3. Rating will be represented by different sized stars; the larger the stars the higher the average rating.
  4. Polling will be represented by different sized hands; the larger the thumbs-up the more people that are in favour of that skimbit.
  5. Comments for each skimbit will be listed for easy browsing of responses.

Step 14: Act on your decision

  1. Once you have made a decision, you can now start acting on it.
  2. The 'Next steps' tab of your project page helps you with this. It offers you the following tools:
    • a Google map where you can plot the location of your decision
    • a checklist where you can assign tasks, create a shopping list, etc
    • a notepad where you can publish information about your decision, eg. how much everyone has to pay, bank account details, driving directions, etc
    • an Instant Messaging window where anyone can communicate with you in real-time (you need to create a free account with Meebo to use this)
  3. The left hand side of the page shows all these tools. Soon, more will be developed (e.g. weather tools, news feeds, latest deals etc) and you will be able to pick those relevant to you.
  4. Your friends can also come to this page to be kept informed or contribute
